I’ve noticed that printmakers have a certain kind of temperament. They love repetition, the stages of a plate or block, and variations on a theme. They also love the abundance that prints can represent: One for you, and you, and one for me. Thanks to a wonderful teacher who somehow obtained a large etching press for our public high school, I started making a variety of prints in my teens, including intaglio, relief, and silk screen. I carved wood and linoleum, and printed on fabric.

It wasn’t until I started to teach that I identified the printmaker’s temperament in some of my students, who would mix color after color and monopolize the presses, versus the students who would carve a block, print one copy, and declare their work “done.”
